“Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going inside ourselves.”
― Bessel A. Van der Kolk
Does it ever feel like you don’t know who is in charge of your life? Or you’re sick and tired of being your own block in life. Maybe it feels like you have a 15-year-old self is in the drivers seat at times, making all the decisions who feels a lack of support or doesn’t know what to do. Or maybe it’s a 5-year-old self who feels unable to communicate about themselves, is afraid and fearful of criticism of others so freezes when in certain social settings and keeps silent. Maybe you feel confused why one part of you wants to pursue a goal while another part of you is deathly afraid of taking any action.
I find in my clinical work that we all have parts of us. Some refer to it as having various sub-personalities within one person. These parts keep us in behavioral patterns to keep our inner balance and peace yet can also keep us stuck in behaviors and patterns that keep us from our bigger goals for ourselves. I can help you begin to relate differently with yourself and your parts, with more compassion or curiosity. We can also help parts access more ability to step into more creative and life-giving roles.
I use Internal Family Systems (IFS) as a guide to helping connect clients with parts of themselves. Dr. Dick Schwartz, developer of IFS, suggests that instead of fighting off parts of ourselves that are feeling down, hurt, weak, or small, if we can turn inwards and send compassion to these parts of ourselves then we begin to experience relief and healing.
